Do Developers Trust AI? Survey Reveals Mixed Feelings and Future Trends

Read: A survey of 13,000 developers found most believe AI will reduce their workload and want to use it more, yet many remain skeptical.

CoderPad’s latest “2024 Tech Hiring Landscape” report, released on January 9, shows that 70 % of developers think AI will help cut their workload and 60 % want to use AI more at work.

Respondents expressed confidence in AI‑assisted tools, citing benefits such as code assistance, learning/tutorials, autocomplete, code generation, and documentation/API support.

“I use AI to help write code; otherwise manual coding is a waste of time, for example using different URLs or short Python scripts to create fetch functions,” said an anonymous participant.

However, 29 % of developers do not trust AI, 28 % say their employers oppose its use, a quarter consider AI unreliable or inefficient, and one‑third view AI use in interviews or technical tests as cheating.

The survey covered over 13,000 developers from 149 countries and about 5,500 hiring professionals. Additional findings include:

36 % of developers are not interested in taking on management responsibilities.

75 % are satisfied with their current management abilities.

Job‑security concerns are rising: 21 % feel less secure than a year ago (up from 17 % last year), 37 % report no major change, and 32 % feel more secure.
