Google Merges DeepMind and Google Brain into Google DeepMind – What It Means for AI

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that DeepMind and Google Brain will be merged to form a single focused department called Google DeepMind.

Demis Hassabis will serve as the CEO of Google DeepMind, while Jeff Dean will become chief scientist, both reporting directly to Pichai.

In an internal letter, Hassabis wrote that combining their talents and efforts will accelerate progress toward an AI‑driven world that tackles humanity’s greatest challenges, and he expressed enthusiasm for leading the new department.

Pichai’s official blog highlighted that Google now has two world‑class research teams whose foundational breakthroughs have shaped the AI industry, and that the new unit will pursue bold and responsible development of AGI.

The letter reflects on DeepMind’s 2010 launch, when AGI was considered a distant sci‑fi concept, and notes the rapid pace of AI research today, positioning the merger as a way to unite top talent with Google’s product teams to improve billions of lives and drive scientific advancement.

Hassabis emphasized the need to work faster, strengthen collaboration, streamline decision‑making, and focus on high‑impact outcomes to build safer, more capable AGI.

By combining DeepMind’s and Google Brain’s world‑class researchers, computing power, infrastructure, and resources, Google DeepMind aims to create the next generation of AI breakthroughs and products, building on advances such as deep reinforcement learning and Transformers.

Leadership will collaborate closely, with Eli Collins joining as VP of Product, Zoubin Ghahramani joining the research leadership team, and a new scientific committee chaired by Koray Kavukcuoglu to oversee research direction.

Google DeepMind’s first project is expected to be a suite of powerful multimodal AI models, leveraging Google’s extensive computing resources to accelerate AI progress.
