Aikang Group needed a portable kiosk for on‑site (door‑to‑door) health examinations, but existing devices were bulky and heavy, creating a burden for field staff.

Design Exploration

To meet the requirement for a smaller, lighter device without sacrificing performance, the team conducted extensive brainstorming and explored at least six distinct architectural concepts. Some concepts prioritized volume reduction, others maximized screen‑to‑body ratio, improved portability, or offered novel aesthetics.

In‑Depth Design Solution

The chosen solution employs an internal stacked structure that minimizes overall size and stabilizes the unit during transport. A retractable suitcase‑style handle with a wheel set enables easy movement by field staff. An innovative paper‑tray‑outside A4 printer was selected to keep the internal footprint minimal while allowing quick paper replenishment—a first in the industry.

In parallel, the UI/UX was refreshed to ensure seamless hardware‑software integration. The onboarding flow presents essential information clearly and concisely, providing a smooth first‑time experience.

Prototype Production

During the detailed design phase, several rapid‑iteration cycles were performed. Close collaboration with the manufacturing supplier resolved numerous production challenges, aligning component tolerances, cost, and assembly difficulty with the design goals.

Deployment and Impact

The portable kiosk integrates self‑registration, photo capture, payment, printing, and QR‑code scanning in a single unit. Its footprint is comparable to a backpack, dramatically reducing front‑desk space usage. The sleek, unified aesthetic aligns with commercial equipment standards.

Since its launch, the device has been deployed in on‑site health‑check scenarios, delivering a one‑stop hardware solution that improves efficiency and user experience. The project received the 2021 IAI International Advertising Award (Industrial Design category) and was praised by the group, field staff, and judges.
