How Baidu Baike Transformed from Knowledge Search to Interactive Exploration

Introduction

As a leading knowledge platform, Baidu Baike faced slow growth due to reliance on search traffic and an outdated experience. The design team aimed to shift from a passive “knowledge search” mode to an active “knowledge exploration” mode.

Comprehensive Product Experience Analysis

Four core issues were identified: massive content causing information overload, outdated page design, lack of interactive features, and weak inter‑article connectivity.

Design Goals and Strategy

Four dimensions—experience, visual, interaction, and content—were targeted with five design strategies: framework restructuring, design language upgrade, immersive containers, navigation enhancement, and bottom‑bar redesign.

1. Optimize Framework Structure

Rebuilt the page hierarchy, introduced an immersive container, structured information, and improved navigation hierarchy.

2. Upgrade Design Language

Adopted a card‑based layout, refined visual hierarchy, integrated brand elements, and reduced visual noise for better readability.

3. Build Scroll‑Based Structured Layout

Implemented a scrollable, linked layout to present related entries in a multi‑dimensional knowledge network.

4. Innovate Interaction and Knowledge Exploration

Extracted key points into concise features, created thematic pages, and designed pathways for deeper exploration.

5. Create a Structured Knowledge System

Developed a hierarchical knowledge tree with color‑coded levels and card‑style visuals to strengthen article connectivity.

Results

Post‑launch metrics showed significant increases in page dwell time and views. User interviews indicated higher satisfaction, perceived professionalism, and a stronger desire to explore content.

Conclusion

The redesign proved effective in enhancing user experience, differentiating Baidu Baike from competitors, and positioning it as a leading knowledge‑exploration platform.
