How KubeVela is Shaping the Future of Cloud‑Native Application Delivery

KubeVela, an award‑winning open‑source cloud‑native platform, emerged from the OAM model to simplify and standardize application delivery across multi‑cloud environments, offering user‑friendly abstractions, programmable extensibility, workflow‑centric deployment, and a community‑driven evolution that positions it as a leading solution in platform engineering.

Cloud‑Native Open‑Source Standardization Evolution

In the 2022 InfoQ China Technology Power ranking, KubeVela won both “Top 10 Emerging Open‑Source Projects” and “Developers’ Favorite Open‑Source Projects”. The project, just over two years old, quickly gained developer trust by addressing long‑standing gaps in server‑cluster management, resource scheduling, and application lifecycle standardization.

Cloud computing and the rise of containers and Kubernetes made it possible to abstract infrastructure, hide IaaS differences, and enable seamless multi‑cloud migration. However, developers faced two challenges: a lack of standardized application delivery and the high complexity of raw Kubernetes APIs.

Standardizing and simplifying application delivery became a natural next step, driving the emergence of KubeVela.

KubeVela: A Push Toward Application Delivery Standards

After the Open Application Model (OAM) was released in 2019 by Alibaba Cloud and Microsoft, the Alibaba Cloud native team realized that a model alone was insufficient. Multiple internal implementations diverged, and the community reported that OAM lacked a concrete implementation.

Motivated by community demand, the team built an open‑source implementation, giving birth to KubeVela.

Core Principles Guiding KubeVela

User‑friendly yet extensible : Provides high‑level abstractions based on OAM while allowing unlimited extensions.

Programmable : Uses “Infra as Code” to enable modular, plugin‑based extensions.

Workflow‑centric delivery model : Introduces a lightweight workflow engine that integrates naturally with Kubernetes and GitOps.

Real‑world scenario driven : Designs features such as Helm support, GitOps pipelines, and multi‑cluster/multi‑cloud deployment based on large‑scale internal practice and community feedback.

Balancing Functionality and Low Entry Barriers

KubeVela’s early success stemmed from its low‑friction onboarding: the first release behaved like an upgrade rather than a brand‑new system, and the team prioritized installation simplicity, example use‑cases, and clear documentation.

To manage the many extension points, the community introduced the “Addon” concept, standardizing development, storage, distribution, and upgrade mechanisms.

As features grew, the project faced complexity challenges. The 2021 v1.1 release added multi‑cluster management and workflow‑driven delivery, raising the entry bar for end‑users. Consequently, the team created VelaUX, a plugin‑based UI that offers a “one‑click” experience for developers while preserving the powerful engine for platform builders.

Community‑Driven Growth and CNCF Graduation

KubeVela’s open‑source development model, community contributions, and global adoption led to its donation to the CNCF in July 2021 and its graduation to a CNCF Incubation project. Today, contributors span over 70 organizations worldwide, and the platform powers Alibaba Cloud products such as SAE, ACK One, EDAS, and CDN, as well as solutions at banks, AI firms, and other enterprises.

Platform Engineering Alignment

Gartner’s 2023 “Top 10 Technology Trends” highlights platform engineering, a vision that aligns perfectly with KubeVela’s mission to provide a standardized, low‑friction application delivery layer across heterogeneous cloud environments.
