How Open Firmware Testing Platforms Are Shaping AI Server Innovation

On December 13, the Firmware Industry Innovation Alliance held its summit in Hangzhou, attracting more than 30 domestic companies—including Alibaba Cloud, ByteDance, Baidu, Huawei, and others—and over a hundred firmware professionals to exchange ideas on firmware development and open standards.

Keynote on Firmware Importance

Guo Nan, deputy director of the China Electronics Standardization Institute, emphasized that firmware bridges hardware and software, serving as a core component for stable and efficient IT operations. He highlighted the rapid growth of China’s chip industry and the expanding market demand for innovative firmware solutions.

Open Firmware Testing Platform Release

Alibaba Cloud led the release of an open‑source firmware testing platform during the main forum. The platform supports BIOS/BMC group‑standard certification tests and will soon cover five additional industry‑standard test suites, providing baseline testing guidance for internet and telecom sectors.

Since its inception last June, the platform has amassed contributions from over 40 developers across more than ten alliance members, delivering more than 200 test cases that satisfy BIOS and BMC compliance as well as cloud‑server model introduction testing. Alibaba Cloud designed the framework and core modules, integrating mainstream firmware use‑case tests into the open‑source project.

Yang Qing, senior technical expert at Alibaba Cloud Server R&D, received the Best Open‑Source Contribution Award for his work on the platform.

PCIe Switch Firmware Showcase

Senior server R&D expert Jiang Xiaoan, together with HuaQin, presented the first public demonstration of PCIe Switch firmware technology. The talk highlighted how PCIe Switches are critical for AI servers with thousands of GPUs, improving data transfer efficiency and overall system performance while reducing system complexity and enhancing stability.

Future Directions: Self‑Development and Open Ecosystem

Alibaba Cloud continues to innovate in OpenBMC and PCIe Switch firmware, addressing the growing demands of AI‑driven data centers. The company actively contributes to global and domestic firmware standards such as UEFI, DMTF, and OpenBMC, promoting an open ecosystem that balances proprietary development with community collaboration.

Looking ahead, the alliance aims to further open firmware standards, enabling hardware to achieve peak performance and high reliability across the industry.
