How Tencent’s App Store Is Reviving Android on Windows (AOW) After WSA’s Decline

Background

In 2021 Microsoft introduced Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) in Windows 11. WSA enables native execution of Android applications on x86‑based PCs by using Intel Bridge Technology , which translates Android bytecode to x86 instructions at runtime. The subsystem is built on a Hyper‑V virtual machine and includes a Linux kernel‑like layer and an Android OS derived from AOSP 11, similar to the architecture of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Distribution shift

WSA originally relied on the Amazon Appstore as its primary distribution channel. In 2023 Amazon announced its withdrawal from the Android ecosystem, removing the main source of Android apps for Windows 11 and causing the WSA project to lose momentum.

Tencent partnership and rebranding

To restore a distribution pathway, Tencent’s App Store (应用宝) partnered with the Microsoft Store. The PC version of the App Store is delivered through the Microsoft Store and runs on the native WSA implementation. The product is re‑branded as Android on Windows (AOW) , effectively giving the Android subsystem a new storefront.

Technical architecture of the PC version

Intel Bridge Technology : a runtime just‑in‑time compiler that converts Android DEX bytecode to optimized x86 machine code, improving performance and compatibility.

Intel Celadon : an open‑source Android distribution optimized for Intel x86 platforms, providing the underlying Android system image used by AOW.

The engine combines the Bridge translator with Celadon, running inside the existing WSA Hyper‑V VM, so no additional virtualization layer is required.

Market context

According to industry data, Tencent’s App Store holds the largest share of the third‑party Android channel in China, commanding roughly 51 % of the domestic Android emulator market . Tencent projects that the desktop version will exceed 10 million daily active users (DAU) by the end of the year , making it a significant source of Android apps for Windows PCs.
