How Vinton Cerf Shaped the Internet: The Story Behind the IEEE Medal of Honor

Vinton Cerf, widely regarded as the "father of the Internet," was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2023 in recognition of his contributions to the development of internet architecture and his leadership in treating the internet as a critical societal infrastructure.

In 1974, Cerf, then a project manager at the DARPA Information Processing Technology Office, collaborated with Robert Kahn to design the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP). These protocols form the core of the internet, enabling computers worldwide to connect and exchange data.

Since 2005, Cerf has served as Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google in Reston, Virginia, working to promote internet usage for the public good. He also scouts emerging technologies and helps shape policies that support the creation of internet‑based products and services.

"Cerf has shown unwavering commitment throughout his career to the development, improvement, oversight, and dissemination of the internet, leaving an indelible impact on the world," said a supporter of the award. "Because of his efforts, we have the internet, which has transformed how societies live."

Cerf’s work has earned numerous honors, including the 2004 ACM Turing Award—often called the Nobel Prize of computing—shared with Kahn. Together they also received the 2013 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, the 2005 U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the 1997 National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
