The Netcraft April 2022 survey analyzes over 1.16 billion sites, 271 million domains and nearly 12 million web‑facing computers, revealing that nginx leads in market share while providers such as Cloudflare, OpenResty, Pepyaka and GHS show notable growth and shifts in the global web‑server landscape.
Netcraft released its April 2022 global web server survey, covering responses from 1,160,964,134 sites, 271,960,629 unique domains and 11,974,636 web‑facing computers.
Among the top ten providers, nginx led with the highest number of domains and computers, gaining 537,000 domains (net growth) to reach 73.8 million domains and a market share of 27.1 %, while Apache lost 573,000 domains, widening the gap between them by 4.04 percentage points.
nginx added 80,200 web computers (+1.78 %) bringing its share to 38.3 %, whereas Apache fell to 29.0 %.
In the top‑million sites, Cloudflare gained 3,350 sites, Apache held 229,000 sites (down 1,700), and nginx held 218,000 sites (down 2,250). Cloudflare now serves 199,000 sites and could overtake the leaders by year‑end.
OpenResty was the biggest gainers this month, adding 1.61 % (147 000) to reach 93 million total and 6,890 new web computers.
Pepyaka (used by Wix) grew by 27.6 % to 1.22 million active sites, ranking 8th in active web‑server usage and possibly based on the nginx codebase.
GHS (Google Host Server) added 1.08 million sites (+36.7 %) and 554 000 domains (+35.5 %).
The report includes detailed charts of total sites, overall market share, active‑site share, top‑million busy‑site share, and the share of computers and domains.
