Overview of VMware Solutions and Certification System
This article provides a comprehensive overview of VMware's virtualization and cloud solutions—including vSphere, vCloud Suite, and vRealize Suite—and explains the various certification programs such as VAAI, PSA, VASA, SRM, vVols, and vRealize certifications, highlighting their features and integration capabilities.
Today I decided to discuss VMware's solution portfolio and certification system, because my understanding of virtualization began with VMware. Despite several strategic and personnel changes over recent years, VMware remains a leader in virtualization and private‑cloud technologies, both under EMC and later Dell ownership.
First, I will introduce the overall VMware solutions and their key characteristics, and then I will describe the VMware certification ecosystem.
VMware Solution Overview
VMware offers a broad range of solutions, including IaaS data‑center infrastructure, hyper‑converged platforms (EVO:Rail, Ready Nodes, vSAN), storage (vSAN, vVol, vFlash), desktop virtualization (Horizon View), high‑availability (SRM), software‑defined networking (NSX), cloud management (vRealize Suite), hybrid/public cloud (vCloud Air), private cloud (vCloud Suite), and various trial products. This article focuses on vSphere, vCloud Suite, and vRealize Suite.
vCloud Suite bundles vSphere Enterprise Plus, VMware’s hybrid‑cloud management platform, and the vRealize Suite, enabling the creation and management of both private clouds based on vSphere and multi‑vendor hybrid clouds.
vSphere Introduction
vSphere is a virtualization platform that supports VMFS, vMotion, Storage vMotion, vSphere Storage API, Thin Provisioning, High Availability (HA), Fault Tolerance (FT), and many other features. See the linked articles for detailed feature lists.
Enterprise‑Level Enhancements in vSphere
VMware vSphere Distributed Switch – simplifies and enhances virtual network connectivity.
VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager – automates disaster‑recovery testing and execution.
vSphere Storage/Network I/O Control – prioritises storage and network QoS.
vSphere Auto Deploy – rapid deployment of ESXi hosts without manual patching.
vSphere Flash Read Cache – provides a high‑performance read cache using server‑side flash.
NVIDIA GRID vGPU – adds hardware‑accelerated graphics to virtual machines.
VMware vRealize Suite
The vRealize Suite is a hybrid‑cloud management platform that delivers unified management for vSphere, physical infrastructure, OpenStack, and external clouds such as VMware vCloud Air and Amazon Web Services. Its components include:
vRealize Operations – intelligent performance, capacity, and configuration management across multi‑vendor environments.
vRealize Automation – policy‑driven self‑service provisioning for virtual, physical, and public‑cloud resources.
vRealize Log Insight – real‑time log management and analysis.
vRealize Business – cost accounting, usage metering, and service pricing for virtual environments.
Software‑Defined Data Center (SDDC) Components
VMware vSAN – software‑defined storage that abstracts and pools storage resources.
VMware NSX – hardware‑agnostic network and security virtualization.
vRealize Operations & Automation Public Cloud Extensions – extend on‑premise capabilities to public clouds (vCloud Air, AWS, Azure).
vCloud Air – hybrid‑cloud public‑cloud service with disaster‑recovery capabilities.
vRealize Suite CMP – the cloud‑management platform layer that integrates all SDDC technologies.
VMware Integrated OpenStack – enables OpenStack APIs to manage VMware resources.
VMware Certification System
VMware provides a comprehensive certification framework covering storage interfaces (VAAI, VASA, PSA), vCenter management, disaster‑recovery (SRM), and data‑center management. Highlights include:
VAAI (vSphere APIs for Array Integration)
VAAI offloads specific operations such as cloning and block zeroing to storage arrays, improving performance. It supports both Block and NAS storage, offering features like Assisted Locking, Full Copy, Block Zero, Thin Provisioning, Space Reservation, File Cloning, Extended Stats, and Native Snapshots for Link Clone.
PSA (Pluggable Storage Architecture)
PSA enables third‑party storage vendors to provide multi‑path I/O plugins that work alongside VMware’s native NMP, delivering better performance and reliability.
VASA (vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness)
VASA provides storage‑aware APIs that expose array health, configuration, capacity, and thin‑provisioning details to vSphere, enabling unified management and monitoring.
SRM (Site Recovery Manager)
SRM offers automated disaster‑recovery workflows, repeatable testing, and policy‑driven failover/failback across multiple sites, supporting both array‑based replication and vSphere Replication.
SRM Stretch (Active‑Active)
SRM Stretch extends SRM for active‑active data‑center configurations, using SPBM policies to ensure consistent failover behavior.
vVols (Virtual Volumes)
vVols, together with VASA providers, enable storage‑policy‑driven automation at the VM level, leveraging array capabilities such as snapshots, cloning, deduplication, and QoS.
vRealize Operations Certification
vRealize Operations provides intelligent monitoring of storage performance, capacity, alerts, and compliance across physical, virtual, and cloud resources, with dashboards for storage objects, capacity hotspots, and topology.
vRealize Orchestrator Certification
vRealize Orchestrator allows third‑party vendors to develop plugins that automate complex workflows across vSphere, vRealize Automation, and vRealize Operations using SOAP/REST APIs.
