PYPL IDE Index August 2023: Which Development Environments Lead the Pack?

The PYPL August IDE Index has been released. The top 10 IDEs remain unchanged this month, with Visual Studio, Eclipse, and Android Studio occupying the top three positions. The gap between the first and second place grew from 0.7% last month to 0.86% this month, and Eclipse still did not surpass Visual Studio.

Among the top 10, only half saw an increase in their index compared to last month, including Android Studio, IntelliJ, PyCharm, Visual Studio Code, and Xcode. Xcode’s index, after a continuous decline, has rebounded to 3.55%, while Android Studio’s year‑over‑year increase of 3.0% stands out.

The PYPL index is a widely used reference metric based on Google Trends data. The Top IDE Index is generated by PYPL by analyzing how often users search for different IDEs on Google; the more searches an IDE receives, the more popular it is considered, making the list a useful guide for developers choosing an IDE for their projects.

Globally, Visual Studio has remained the most popular IDE in recent years, Android Studio has experienced the highest growth over the past five years (10.6%), while Eclipse has seen the largest decline (-15.6%).
