September 2023 PYPL Rankings: Which Language Leads the Pack?

PYPL (Popularity of Programming Language) released its September ranking, which measures programming language and IDE popularity based on Google search frequency from Google Trends.

Developers can use PYPL as a reference when choosing which language or IDE to learn or adopt for new projects.

The top five languages are Python, Java, Java, C# and PHP. Compared with September last year, Python rose 4.5%, Java fell 2.1%, and PHP fell 1.0%, while other languages showed little change. Python holds a 28.73% share, ahead of Java’s 20.0%, and the third‑ranked Java has only 8.35%.

Globally, Python remains the most popular language, achieving the largest growth over the past five years (+18.2%), whereas Java lost the most share (‑6.9%).

Other languages showing recent gains include Rust, Go, TypeScript and Kotlin, with Kotlin’s share jumping from 0.94% in June to 1.4% and remaining stable.

Languages such as R and Perl have seen slight declines, with Perl at 0.58% (19th) and R at 3.92% (7th).
