The Importance of Listening for Leaders

Listening is the most important skill a leader must master, forming the foundation for many other leadership abilities. However, mastering it is difficult because it requires greater focus, dedication, attentiveness, and flexibility.

In today’s digital era, good listening is becoming increasingly rare, turning into an "endangered species." True listening goes beyond merely hearing words; it involves thinking about the speaker’s viewpoint, truly understanding the content, and reflecting on it.

Many people are not accustomed to initiating conversations or asking questions, yet they also avoid listening because they never stop talking or they anticipate the other’s response and rush to reply. Effective listening therefore demands both ears and heart.

“The most important thing in communication is to grasp the deeper meaning beyond words.” – Peter Drucker

Language learning emphasizes four basic skills—listening, speaking, reading, writing—but the crucial skill of listening is often neglected. In communication, listening, understanding, pausing, restating, organizing language, and responding are all vital.

Typically, we retain only about 25% of what we hear because we are too busy and lack listening ability. Poor listening hampers a 360° understanding of situations, leading to solving the wrong problems and wasting time and resources.

One cause of this is the “communication funnel”: when a person tries to convey 100% of their thoughts in a meeting, about 20% is lost, leaving only 80% communicated.

According to Baidu Baike, the communication funnel refers to the phenomenon where team communication efficiency drops because a portion of the intended message is lost when expressed verbally.

Companies such as BlackBerry, Kodak, and Nokia suffered heavy costs because their leaders refused to listen, operating in bubbles and ignoring external feedback. As success grows, leaders must welcome fresh ideas and sincere feedback; listening is the best way to understand customer needs and craft targeted strategies.

Developing leadership ability is a lifelong endeavor. Leaders should be eager learners, seek valuable input from within and outside the organization, and respect everyone—from gatekeepers to CEOs—because great business insights often come from unexpected sources.

Poor communication can cost companies millions annually. Leaders must encourage open, honest thinking, stay receptive to employee viewpoints, and continuously adapt and improve to remain competitive.

How can we reduce the communication funnel and achieve effective communication?

When listening, ask “why” repeatedly and avoid assumptions.

Speak with clear structure, summarize, and keep key points to around three.

Continuously confirm feedback; document important content in writing.

DevOps coaches advocate personal leadership and influence, where listening is indispensable; those pursuing DevOps coaching should reflect on and practice this skill.
