Top 8 Programming Languages in Demand in 2023 According to DevJobsScanner
Based on an analysis of over 14 million developer job postings from January 2022 to May 2023, the report identifies JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, PHP, C/C++, Ruby and Go as the eight most in‑demand programming languages, detailing their job share percentages and market trends.
During the 17‑month period from January 2022 to May 2023, DevJobsScanner analyzed more than 14 million developer job listings, extracting those with explicit programming‑language requirements to determine the eight languages with the highest demand in 2023.
1. JavaScript / TypeScript
JavaScript remains the most popular language, accounting for 29% of all jobs requiring a specific language; the rise of TypeScript, especially in frameworks like Angular and NestJS, has contributed to this dominance.
DevJobsScanner found 915,000 positions requiring JavaScript or TypeScript during the study period.
2. Python
Python ranked second, driven by its versatility in scripting, server‑side development, and data analysis, and supported by a large community.
It accounted for about 20% of language‑specific job postings, with 603,000 positions.
3. Java
Java held the third spot, maintaining strong usage despite competition from newer languages; frameworks such as Spring keep it relevant.
Approximately 546,000 jobs (17% of the total) required Java.
4. C#
C# is a general‑purpose, object‑oriented language commonly used with the .NET framework and Unity for game development.
It appeared in about 12% of the surveyed positions (375,000 jobs).
5. PHP
PHP, created 27 years ago, remains the fifth most demanded language, representing roughly 10% of all developer positions and is primarily used for web development with frameworks like Laravel and WordPress.
6. C/C++
C and C++ continue to be widely used in games, servers, databases, and even space‑exploration software, though their demand showed a slight decline in 2023, dropping from about 13% in February to 7% in May.
7. Ruby
Ruby ranked seventh, with 134,000 jobs (≈4% of the market), largely driven by the Ruby on Rails web framework and adoption in companies such as Twitter and GitHub.
8. Go
Go, created by Google 12 years ago to improve productivity on multicore and large‑code‑base projects, is gaining traction and is expected to break into the top five languages; companies like Uber and Twitch already use it.
Summary
JavaScript and TypeScript together dominate the developer job market, representing 29% of language‑specific opportunities. Python and Java follow closely, with Java narrowing the gap to Python. C#, PHP, Ruby and Go show stable demand, while C/C++ appears to be on a downward trend.
