Today I present the first episode of internal skill knowledge – CPU Turbo Boost.

Server‑side developers often cite single‑core performance numbers, but this description is not rigorous for two reasons.

The first reason is that different CPU cores have varying performance because factors such as base frequency and cache size affect how the CPU runs.

This is easy to understand: when buying a personal computer, newer processors are usually more powerful, while older machines with many cores may still perform modestly.

The second reason is that even CPUs with identical base frequency and cache can exhibit significant performance differences because some CPUs support turbo boost technology.

In the early days, many PC enthusiasts manually adjusted voltage, cooling, external clock, power supply, BIOS, etc., to overclock their machines, which often led to instability on servers.

Turbo boost, developed by CPU manufacturers, intelligently controls frequency, automatically raising the CPU’s clock speed within safe temperature and power limits to enhance performance.

This is analogous to turbocharging in the automotive world: a 1.6 L turbocharged engine delivers far more power than a naturally aspirated 1.6 L engine.

Similarly, CPU turbo boost acts like a turbocharger, providing stronger processing performance compared to CPUs without turbo.

Let’s look at a real CPU example: Intel’s E5‑2690, which has a base frequency of about 2.9 GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 3.8 GHz.

Reasonably leveraging turbo boost can significantly boost your system’s performance.
