Unlock Enterprise AI Success with the New AI Adoption Maturity Model (AIM²)
The article introduces the AI Adoption Maturity Model (AIM²), a five‑level framework covering strategy, organization, data, technology, application, and business, and showcases industry case studies that illustrate how enterprises can assess their AI readiness, identify gaps, and accelerate AI‑driven transformation.
On September 12, at the 2025 Inclusion·外滩大会 “Insight 2035: AI‑Driven Industry Breakthroughs and Intelligent Evolution” forum, Shanghai Jiao Tong University together with BOC Technology Finance Institute and leading enterprises unveiled the industry’s first AI Adoption Maturity Model (AIM²).
The model defines five progressive levels from “single‑point trial” to “AI‑native” (L1‑L5) and structures assessment across six dimensions—strategy, organization, data, technology, application, and business—to guide enterprises in evaluating AI readiness and charting a path from “+AI” to “AI+”.
As large‑model infrastructure converges, competition shifts from compute to data and scenarios; high‑quality data becomes the decisive factor. Professor Liu Shaoxuan, co‑lead of the AIM² team, likens the six dimensions to a rocket: strategy as the command module, organization as the booster, data as fuel, technology as flight control, application as trajectory, and business value as the target.
Industry case studies in finance, automotive, health, and retail illustrate varying maturity stages and concrete AI deployments, such as Pacific Insurance’s “digital workforce”, Industrial Bank’s hundreds of AI agents, Li Auto’s ROI‑driven product intelligence, LeFit’s smart stores, Ant Group’s digital health ecosystem, and L’Oréal’s AI‑enhanced consumer experience.
The AIM² framework helps companies pinpoint current status, identify gaps, plan pathways, and quantify AI investment returns, turning AI from proof‑of‑concept to scalable value and establishing a sustainable competitive edge.
