What the 2020 Cloud‑Native Survey Reveals About Enterprise Adoption Trends

Survey Overview

The 2020 Cloud‑Native Survey, conducted by the Cloud‑Native Technology Practice Alliance (CNBPA) together with Lingque Cloud and the Cloud‑Native Technology Community, collected 613 valid questionnaires from enterprises of various sizes and industries in China during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Methodology

Respondents were senior IT managers (over 50% at manager level) from finance, manufacturing, energy, pharmaceutical, telecom and government sectors. Company server counts were 100‑500 (26.5%), 500‑1000 (21.1%) and over 1000 (24.5%).

Key Findings

Cloud‑native has become the new normal; containerization demand has shifted from leading enterprises to small‑ and medium‑size firms.

52.3% of enterprises use cloud‑native technologies in production (21.7% for core business, 30.6% for edge services).

The pandemic created a window of opportunity that accelerated digital transformation and cloud‑native adoption.

Container Adoption

8.2% of surveyed companies run more than 5,000 containers; 61.2% operate fewer than 500 containers. The high scalability of Kubernetes improves server utilization and reduces overall server counts compared with the previous year.

Microservices & Service Mesh

23.5% of enterprises use micro‑services to refactor legacy applications, while 40.8% adopt micro‑services for new digital‑business systems. Spring Cloud is the dominant framework (58.2%). Service Mesh adoption stands at 11.8% and is expected to grow within two years.

DevOps Maturity

Approximately 85% of enterprises have implemented or plan to invest in DevOps. Current implementation is 35.7%; 20% plan deployment within six months, 21.4% within 6‑12 months, and 8.2% within 12‑24 months. Frequently used tools include GitHub/GitLab (74.5%), Jenkins (52%), Jira (39.8%), Confluence (35.7%) and SonarQube (29.6%).

Supporting Technologies Alignment

Middleware (e.g., Elastic, Confluent) is used by 69.4% of respondents, databases (especially NoSQL) by 65.3%, storage (e.g., Ceph) by 50%, and security solutions by 33.7%. Open‑source versions are preferred by 41.9%, commercial editions by 22.3%, and a mixed approach by 35.8%.

IT Budget Outlook

36.6% of enterprises expect a reduced IT budget, 33.7% anticipate a modest 1‑5% increase, 9.2% foresee no impact, and 10% project growth exceeding 10%.

Conclusions

Digital transformation is a strategic imperative driven by cost‑reduction, agility and customer‑experience goals. Cloud‑native, Kubernetes, DevOps and micro‑services have become priority technologies for modernizing legacy workloads, improving resource elasticity, and accelerating value delivery. While many firms still rely on third‑party vendors for implementation, 26.5% prefer to build their own PaaS platforms. The survey indicates that cloud‑native adoption is maturing, with a robust ecosystem of supporting tools and services, and that post‑pandemic investment in these technologies is likely to continue.
