Which Chinese Internet Companies Pay the Highest Engineer Hourly Rates? A Detailed Ranking

When selecting a company we often look at total compensation (

) which includes base salary, bonuses, stock, etc., but hourly wage is a crucial metric that reflects earnings per unit time.

Given the heavy overtime in big tech, we created an hourly wage ranking to clarify which companies pay the most per hour. Below are our results (China's minimum hourly wage is about 22 CNY).

Calculation method: For junior, mid, senior, lead, and expert levels we took the median salary of the past year, multiplied by weekly work hours, and by 49 weeks (52 weeks minus 2 weeks public holidays and 1 week annual leave) to get annual work hours, then divided total compensation by hours to obtain hourly wage.

Only companies with sufficient salary submissions were included.

Note: Lunch break of two hours is excluded from work time.

Junior Engineer Hourly Wage Ranking

Typically 0-2 years of experience.

Mid-level Engineer Hourly Wage Ranking

Typically 3-5 years of experience.

Senior Engineer Hourly Wage Ranking

Typically 5+ years of experience.

Lead Engineer Hourly Wage Ranking

Typically 8+ years of experience.

Expert/Architect Hourly Wage Ranking

Typically 10+ years of experience.

Conclusion

From the statistics we can see:

Microsoft and Pinduoduo have strong hourly wages for junior, mid, and senior engineers.

Meituan, Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, and Baidu have very competitive hourly wages for senior, lead, and expert engineers.
