When optimizing website performance, I often overlook database read/write separation because its performance improvement is modest—essentially just turning one server into two. As the site grows, the 2× capacity quickly becomes insufficient, prompting the need for new optimization strategies. In practice, database read/write separation is more a side effect of data safety: using a second database server for backup naturally leads to a read/write split, yielding a modest 2× gain.
To achieve ten‑fold or even hundred‑fold performance improvements, the common and effective solution is adding caching and server clusters. Shared caches such as Memcached or Redis can provide 10–30× speedups, in‑process caches can reach 100×, and adding a server doubles computational capacity. However, these techniques benefit only read operations; they have virtually no impact on write performance.
Consequently, there is essentially no way to significantly boost write performance through architectural deployment alone.
From a hardware perspective, using SSDs helps, and replacing the underlying database with systems like HBase or Cassandra could be considered, though those topics are beyond the scope of this discussion. The key point is that because caching and scaling do not improve writes, write services should not be co‑located with the massive compute clusters that handle reads.
Imagine an architecture where a read‑service cluster consists of four servers and there is a single write server (with a standby for failover). When traffic increases, the read cluster can be expanded to eight servers, easily handling the load because read services are stateless and can be horizontally scaled without risking data inconsistency. In practice, only read services tend to be stateless.
When the write service becomes a bottleneck, adding cache or more servers is not the solution; this scenario often appears as an interview question for architects.
To clarify why write services should not run inside a cluster, I categorize write services into two types:
1. Weakly state‑related writes, such as user‑generated content (comments, posts), where conflicts are rare. Deploying these in a cluster is marginally feasible but offers little benefit and no risk.
2. Strongly state‑related writes, such as inventory updates during flash‑sale “seckill” events, where concurrent writes can cause serious inconsistencies; running these in a cluster is extremely risky.
Understanding this distinction explains why I advocate using a single dedicated write server: only one active server can guarantee that, for example, a flash‑sale does not sell more items than are in stock.
Astute readers may wonder how a single server handles concurrent writes on multi‑core CPUs. The answer lies in the actor model: asynchronous programming combined with an in‑process message queue can serialize critical operations efficiently.
In conclusion, server clusters dramatically improve read‑service performance but are ineffective for writes. Write services should follow a master/slave pattern with only one active server, and inside that server, use programming languages that support the actor model—such as Erlang, Go, Scala, or F#—to ensure safe serialization of critical write operations.
