Why Tencent Is Shutting Down Tencent Classroom: Lessons from a Decade of Online Education

Official notice states that from 1 August 2024 new course content on Tencent Classroom will be inaccessible, while existing free courses listed in the “Course Table” remain viewable. The platform will cease all operations on 1 October 2024.

Platform Background

Tencent Classroom launched in April 2014 as a comprehensive online lifelong‑learning platform. It aggregated courses covering IT, design, language, exam preparation, and other professional‑education topics, leveraging the massive user bases of QQ and WeChat.

Growth Milestones

By August 2020 the service had served over 400 million learners, hosted more than 300 000 courses, and recorded daily active users exceeding 10 million. It ranked first in daily active‑user volume and second in compound growth among Chinese education platforms.

By August 2020 the platform’s weekly active users surpassed ten million, with over 30 0000 courses and more than 300 000 institutions (schools, training agencies, enterprises, public sectors) using the service.

In January 2021 a joint report by New Beijing Daily and Qianlong Think Tank placed Tencent Classroom third among 47 adult‑education brands surveyed.

COVID‑19 Response

At the start of 2020, amid the pandemic, Tencent Classroom introduced a commission‑free policy for offline education providers and offered free services to schools. The resulting traffic surge overloaded servers, generated extensive social‑media discussion, and significantly raised the platform’s industry visibility.

Strategic Context of the Shutdown

The closure follows Tencent’s broader post‑2022 strategy of eliminating non‑core businesses that consume management resources without delivering proportional returns. Since 2022 the company has terminated more than 40 projects, including Penguin Esports, QQ Music, the XR department, Enterprise FM, and Tencent Animation. In an internal speech at the end of 2022, CEO Ma Huateng emphasized the need to cut non‑core operations to improve efficiency.

Current Access Status

As of the writing, the website still allows user login. The iOS App Store no longer lists the Tencent Classroom app, and the Android store displays a notice that the app is temporarily unavailable due to developer reasons.
