How Taobao Redefined Shopping for Seniors: The ‘Elder Mode’ Design Journey

Taobao’s senior‑friendly “Elder Mode” redesign tackles the challenges of an aging population by enlarging fonts, simplifying information, adding voice search, creating a walking‑based game, and implementing seamless version switching, all backed by extensive user research, technical solutions, and A/B experiments to improve the digital shopping experience for older users.

How Taobao Redefined Shopping for Seniors: The ‘Elder Mode’ Design Journey

Background and Opportunity

The latest national census shows that over 260 million Chinese are aged 60+, making population aging a concrete reality. Helping seniors integrate into digital life has become a critical issue. Taobao has long focused on senior users, launching family accounts and a senior version in 2018. After the pandemic, senior internet usage surged, highlighting the need for deeper assistance.

Business Characteristics and Challenges

From the senior perspective, three main pain points were identified in Taobao shopping: "cannot see clearly", "cannot understand", and "cannot search". The team prioritized three actions: font enlargement, information simplification, and voice search.

Implementation Plan Overview

The project aimed to improve senior users' browsing and purchasing experience, remove key obstacles, and bring joy. The first phase focused on the following five aspects:

Analyzed more than 20 high‑frequency senior scenarios across the app (home, search, detail, interactive features) and defined a comprehensive visual and functional redesign.

Added a voice‑search feature with a personable assistant (Taobao Xiao Bao) to handle queries such as logistics, after‑sale service, and product recommendations.

Designed a senior‑specific interactive game “Taobao Travel China” that converts daily steps into virtual travel rewards.

Elder‑Mode Interface Redesign

The redesign tackled two core questions:

How to adapt all core screens to larger sizes without a full rebuild? How to keep standard‑mode interaction habits seamless after scaling?

Key actions included:

Font size specification : Established a step‑by‑step mapping from standard to senior font sizes, preserving layout hierarchy.

Image and container scaling : Scaled image assets and containers that contain text to match the enlarged typography.

Critical page reconstruction : Re‑engineered key pages such as product detail to use a clearer grid and list layout, reducing vertical columns and widening components.

Full‑Chain Font Scaling Technology

Leveraging the DinamicX framework, the rendering engine automatically scales text based on a senior‑mode flag, applying the predefined size mapping without additional developer effort. Custom components can also adopt the scaling via font‑calculation expressions.

Personalized Feature Customization for Seniors

Beyond visual changes, the team introduced content and interaction customizations:

Customized content : Emphasized real user purchase data, scene‑based product images, and short videos to build trust.

Simplified information : Replaced technical terms with colloquial language (e.g., "press and speak to search" instead of "long‑press for voice search").

Clear guidance : Used concrete visual cues and step‑by‑step instructions to aid task completion.

Voice Interaction – Taobao Xiao Bao

Taobao Xiao Bao provides an empathetic voice assistant that proactively offers care, hot‑search recommendations, and logistics updates. It activates after detecting idle behavior (e.g., >10 seconds on the home page) and learns from user clicks to improve recommendations.

Interactive Game – Taobao Travel China

The game lets seniors donate daily walking steps to earn virtual travel experiences and city‑specific souvenirs. After completing steps, users watch short videos about the city and answer quiz questions for extra rewards.

App Version Hot‑Switching Technology

Version switching now supports user‑initiated hot‑switch, automatic promotion, and passive migration. The switch flag is stored server‑side by user ID, ensuring stability across reinstallations and device changes. Hot‑switch is achieved by reading/writing memory on the client side, allowing immediate effect without restarting the app.

Data Experimentation

To evaluate the impact of each redesign point, the team set up independent A/B experiments for every link in the full‑chain redesign, ensuring orthogonal traffic allocation. A global 2 % bucket served as a control, while the remaining 98 % received the optimized variants. The Alibaba internal A/B platform (YiXiu) provided a global empty‑bucket model to aggregate overall lift.

Future Outlook

Taobao Elder Mode 1.0 launched on 12 Oct 2021, covering Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 3 is underway, aiming to further enhance senior experience. Early metrics show double‑digit growth in active users and conversion rates, with notable adoption by users under 45, indicating broader appeal.

Continuing to refine senior‑centric design aligns with Alibaba’s social responsibility and creates new business value.
