What’s New in WeChat? A Deep Dive into Floating Windows, Job Search, and AI Assistant
WeChat’s latest update introduces an enhanced floating‑window system, a built‑in job‑search function, a new star‑mark feature for quick access, and an AI assistant, all aimed at improving multitasking, productivity, and user interaction across iOS, Android, and HarmonyOS platforms.
Floating Window Revamp
WeChat 8.0.57 (iOS/Android) and PC 4.0.3 re‑introduce the floating‑window feature. The new implementation supports up to five simultaneous mini‑windows that can contain mini‑programs, public‑account articles, files, music, or third‑party webpages. To create a floating window, open the target content, tap the “···” menu in the top‑right corner, and select “Floating Window” . The window docks to the screen edge as a narrow bar; users can drag the bar to reposition it and tap the bar to expand the window. Multiple windows can be switched by tapping their respective bars, enabling true multitasking without returning to the main chat interface. This restores the mini‑program support that was removed in the 2021 iOS 8.0 update.
Each floating window can be closed by tapping the “X” icon on the bar, and the system automatically limits the total number of active windows to five to preserve performance.
Job Search Integration
Within the Search interface, entering keywords such as “nearby jobs”, “part‑time”, or “daily pay” triggers a location‑based matching engine. The engine queries a government‑verified job database and returns results that can be filtered by:
Distance from the user’s current location
Salary range
Payment terms (e.g., daily settlement)
The service currently covers major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, and the official announcement cites that more than 24,000 users have successfully found employment through the feature.
Star‑Mark Shortcut
A new Star button is added to the “···” menu of mini‑programs, public‑account articles, files, and webpages. Selecting “Star” adds the item to a personal collection that is displayed under a five‑point star icon on the chat home screen. Users can also star an article directly from its title bar; the UI then shows “Starred”. The star collection is accessible with a single tap on the star icon in the upper‑left corner of the chat home, providing quick navigation to frequently used resources.
Built‑in AI Assistant
The update introduces the “Yuanbao Red Packet Cover Assistant” , which functions as a general‑purpose AI chatbot. Users can locate the assistant via the Search page, add it as a friend, and then interact with it by sending text queries. The assistant can answer factual questions, provide conversational replies, and perform simple tasks such as generating red‑packet cover suggestions. It can be pinned to the top of the chat list for instant access.
